U. renews contracts with W. Phila. schools
Last month, Penn received two three-year contract extensions to continue managing Henry C. Lea and Alexander Wilson schools, despite the Philadelphia School District's decision to seize six schools from outside managers. "The decision was made on a case-by-case basis," Director of Philadelphia Public School's Accountability Office Michael Shlesinger said. 05/16/08 5:00am
Ex-student not competent for trial
Former Law student Joseph Cho's latest psychiatric evaluation found him mentally incompetent to face charges of attempted murder. Cho, 32, allegedly fired 15 rounds from a 9 mm handgun into the door of his downstairs neighbors, two male Drexel University students, whom he believed to be spies. 04/25/08 5:00am
Public, but not courts, favors gun measures
Despite last week's court ruling blocking the enforcement of new gun-control measures in Philadelphia, some faculty, students and city residents are still calling for what they call "common-sense" firearm laws. The proposed measures, signed into law by Mayor Nutter earlier this month, would limit individuals to one firearm purchase per month, require that owners report lost or stolen guns within 24 hours, ban the possession of automatic weapons and prohibit persons with an order of protection against them and persons deemed dangerous from possessing firearms. 04/21/08 5:00am
W. Lax | When once isn't enough
Singing, laughing and a customary Gatorade dousing of coaches marked the end of the Penn women's lacrosse team's Ivy League season. The Quakers coasted past Brown Saturday, 12-5, to collect their second consecutive Ivy title. But before Coach Karin Brower's clothes could even dry, the Quakers (12-1, 7-0) had their sights set on revenge and the Division I championship. 04/18/08 5:00am
Nutter's gun laws get shot down
Five gun-control measures unanimously passed by City Council and signed into law last Thursday by Mayor Michael Nutter have been met with heavy opposition throughout the past week. The laws prohibit the possession of an automatic weapon within Philadelphia, limit the number of firearms an individual can purchase to one a month, mandate that owners of lost or stolen guns report the loss within 24 hours and ban persons with orders of protection against them from owning guns. 04/16/08 5:00am
Former Law student deemed fit for trial
Former Law student Joseph Cho, accused of trying to kill his neighbors last January, was again found mentally competent to stand trial yesterday. Cho allegedly discharged 15 shots into the door of his neighbors' apartment in January 2007. The neighbors were two male Drexel University students who Cho believed were spies. 04/16/08 5:00am
It all comes down to this
In a battle of Rocky-sized proportions, the underdog No. 6 Quakers' hopes for a second consecutive Ivy title hinge on the outcome of today's game at No. 2 Princeton. The team has had the date circled since the start of the season. "We started seriously practicing and working hard [for the Princeton game] the first day we got to school," senior goalie Sarah Waxman said. 04/14/08 5:00am
E-mail scams targeting colleges nationwide
Penn has emerged unscathed from the latest round of e-mail scams targeting college servers. The fake e-mails, known as phish, have recently changed their tactics to target colleges, according to Douglas Pearson, technical director of an information-sharing and analysis center at Indiana University at Bloomington. 04/14/08 5:00am
Hanover woes put to rest
The theme to Saturday's game between the Penn women's lacrosse team and Dartmouth was out with the old and in with the new. The Big Green said goodbye to their old turf this weekend, as they resurfaced Scully-Fahey Field for the home opener. They also said goodbye to a two-decade home winning streak over the Quakers, who won for the first time since 1988, 8-5. 04/04/08 5:00am
'Improved' Harvard team next for W. Lax
Before heading back on the road, the Penn's women's lacrosse team still has to tie up one loose end at home. The Quakers (8-1, 3-0 Ivy) look to extend their six-game win streak against Harvard at Franklin Field on Sunday. On paper, the Quakers should breeze to a win. 04/03/08 5:00am
Lawyer: Ex-student needs more psych tests
The lawyer for Joseph Cho, the former Penn Law student facing charges of attempted murder, has requested that Cho undergo another psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial. Cho was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing yesterday, but it was postponed after Peter Bowers, Cho's attorney, asked for the mental-health evaluation, according to Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Melissa Francis. 03/31/08 5:00am
Lions left crying 'Uncle!' at Franklin Field
Unlike Little League baseball, there's no 10-goal mercy rule in women's lacrosse. But if there were, Saturday's matchup between Penn and Columbia would've ended well before 60 minutes were up: The Lions were thoroughly thrashed, 13-2. That gave the Quakers reason to cheer when they lined up in front of a sparsely populated grandstand to sing their rendition of "The Red and the Blue" after the game. 03/27/08 5:00am
Pre-law verdict: money matters
Doctors do it for love, while lawyers do it for money - at least according to a recent survey of almost 1,000 pre-law and pre-medical students. Kaplan, the test-prep company, conducted a survey asking 914 students what role earning power played in their choice to pursue a career in either law or medicine. 03/19/08 5:00am
W. Lax: Who's favored? Not Penn State
One of Penn's winningest teams, No. 6 women's lacrosse, will finally play its first game in front of a home crowd, as the squad suits up at Franklin Field tonight against its intrastate rival, No. 19 Penn State. The Quakers (4-1, 1-0 Ivy) will have their work cut out for them against the Nittany Lions (2-3), whose losing record is misleading. 03/18/08 5:00am
Fencing: NCAA Championships: 4, 3, 2, ... don't ask Ron what comes next

For now, no set path for hiring reform
The University's review of hiring practices came closer to an end last week with the Faculty Senate's decision to not include a statement disclosing criminal background as a prerequisite for faculty employment. For now, it's unclear what direction the hiring-practices review will take following the Faculty Senate's decision. 03/07/08 5:00am
Fencing: NCAA Championships | Hard to foil: Penn poised to strike as NCAAs loom
While their classmates are throwing back shots of tequila over spring break next week, eight Quakers will be taking their shot at college fencing's highest honor at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, from March 13-16. But according to coach Dave Micahnik, Penn's biggest challenge won't take place on the piste. 03/06/08 5:00am
Merits of patient-doctor e-mails in question
E-mail has been widely accepted as a form of communication in many industries, but some worry that the medium is not suitable for the health-care field. A recent study by Australian doctors found that patients there were much more likely to communicate with surgeons about operations if the doctors provided e-mail addresses. 03/06/08 5:00am
