DPS gears up for summer crime
As many students look forward to leaving Penn for a summer of relaxation, the Division of Public Safety is preparing for what is one of its busiest periods of the year. Drexel says crime has dropped since new police department was formed
Violent crime has dropped significantly since Drexel University unveiled its new police department, according to Drexel's Senior Associate Vice President for Public Safety Domenic Ceccanecchio. After being officially recognized as a law enforcement agency by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office in June 2008, the department has been operational since March 15. 04/16/09 5:00am

Art Club frustrated by mysterious squirrel disappearances
Many students may not have had time to notice the appearance of ceramic squirrels along Locust Walk over the past few days since several of them have been disappearing. Taxi driver stabs 22-year-old man near campus
A 22-year-old man unaffiliated with the University was stabbed at around 2:15 a.m. Saturday on the 200 block of South 44th Street, according to Philadelphia Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore. *Student hospitalized with rare disease
A senior admitted to the hospital last week has been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human strain of bovine spongiform encephalopathy - commonly known as Mad Cow disease. The disease is fatal, and there is no known treatment or cure. 04/03/09 5:00am

"Topping-off" ceremony honors work on Music Building
As builders working on the new Music Building yesterday were ready to add the final beam to the roof, University officials hosted a traditional "topping-off" ceremony to honor their work over the past eight months. The newly renovated building, which is on schedule for completion by the end of 2009, will include 15 offices and three classrooms in addition to two recording studios, practice rooms and a computer lab. 03/27/09 5:00am

Violent crime for the first two months of 2009 is slightly up compared to this time last year, but crimes against property and theft both show a significant decrease. The total number of crimes for the year to date is also down compared to January and February 2008, from 134 to 106. 03/24/09 5:00am
New BlackBerry application could enhance campus security
An innovative piece of BlackBerry technology developed by a group of engineering students at Yale University could add another dimension to campus safety. The free smartphone application called BScope Mobile was launched just over two weeks ago, and allows BlackBerrys to use raw GPS data to provide highly accurate information on the movements of the phone's owner. 03/18/09 5:00am

Bridging the West Philadelphia gap
Last weekend's late-night disturbances at 40th and Walnut streets have re-ignited the issue of Penn's campus as a leisure destination for the city's young people. At about 11 p.m. Saturday night, about 500 teens formed a riot-like crowd between the McDonald's and the Radian on Walnut Street and had to be dispersed by Penn and Philadelphia Police officers. 03/02/09 5:00am

As Sgt. Casey Ann Busch pulled into the Penn Police Headquarters at 4040 Chestnut St. at midnight last Friday, ending a 17-hour shift, she reflected that it had been a quiet night.
