Matt Conrad: Penn athletics just pulled me in

I have a confession to make: I was never really all that into sports. Not at first, anyway. I casually followed baseball and hockey, but wasn't one of those guys who could recite stats or name 500 different players. And I was in the marching band in high school, but really couldn't care less about how our thoroughly mediocre football team did.

Their final game isn't for two weeks, but for the Quakers, tomorrow's matchup might as well be the last one. No. 8 Maryland visits Franklin Field tomorrow in a game that may be the Penn men's lacrosse team's last hope for a playoff bid. While the regular-season finale is on May 5 against Denver, a win against the ACC powerhouse could put Penn (6-5, 3-3 Ivy) squarely on the bubble.

M. Lax Online Extra: Shockwaves of Dartmouth win may be felt for a long time

With 51 seconds left in the third quarter of Friday's game, Ari Sussman scored a goal for Dartmouth, putting Penn in a 7-3 hole with just one quarter to play. I was covering the game for the DP, and wrote in my notepad ":51, Sussman. Last nail in the coffin?" Shows how much I know.

In a spectacular and emotional comeback, Penn managed to overcome a 7-3 deficit with five unanswered fourth-quarter goals, upending the Big Green 8-7.

Matt Conrad: Balance in Ivies can be restored

Much has been said about the close of this past basketball season being the "end of an era" for Penn hoops. That may be true, but it may turn out to be something equally important: the beginning of another era for Ivy League basketball - one filled with greater balance and parity.

David Cornbrooks wants his ring back. It's the one he should have had last year. A little less than a month into its season, the Penn lacrosse team is off to a fast start, with an early leg up in the Ivy League standings and a weak Harvard team looming just ahead.

A tribute to the Greats

One hundred sixteen games, 79 wins and three Ivy League titles - that's a pretty impressive accomplishment for the senior class of Stephen Danley, Adam Franklin, Ibrahim Jaaber and Mark Zoller. But how do they stack up with the greats from Penn - and the rest of the League - who have graced Ivy gymnasiums over the past four years?

A preseason No. 13, the men's lacrosse team has since fallen from the rankings, despite a 10-6 win over Villanova Friday. But their home opener against Lehigh this evening will present a chance for the Quakers to break into the top 20 again. Although not ranked, Lehigh is coming off a big win, an 8-6 upset of No.

Matt Conrad: League tourney would be Ivies' Bracketbuster

The Ivy League has always has somewhat of a masochistic side. Between disallowing athletic scholarships and prohibiting teams from participating in the football playoffs, the Ancient Eight has spent the better part of a century doing what it can to sabotage its athletic prowess.

2007 is a new year - and if Penn can overcome some key losses and Ivy League opposition that is among the best in the nation, this may be the Quakers' year to reach the top.

Cornell center Andrew Naeve knows his role. Bully your way to the hoop and score. Get back on defense. Repeat. It shows up on his stat sheet: In 651 minutes this season, he has taken only one three-point shot. According to Naeve, "I don't even remember taking that three.

Matt Conrad: Oh, to make those free throws.

About 10 minutes after Saturday's win over Harvard, with the crowd still filing out of the Palestra, a collective cheer went up from the Penn fans walking past the tennis courts. The news quickly spread through the crowd - Cornell had beaten Yale, 60-59, returning the Quakers to their rightful spot atop the Ivy standings.

The last few years have been anything but consistent for Dartmouth basketball. The Big Green have finished everywhere in the standings from third down to last, with Ivy League records ranging from .500 to .071. And when the current seniors began their careers, Terry Dunn was not yet the team's coach.

Matt Conrad: Loss isn't 'good,' but it's not all bad either

After the Quakers' loss to Yale on Saturday, coach Glen Miller wasn't happy. And with good reason - his team had just dropped a game in New Haven for the third time in four years, missed well over half of its free throws, and fallen in the standings behind a team that entered Ivy play with a 4-9 record.

When Temple faced Penn at the Palestra last week, Fran Dunphy's homecoming spurred an intense game with the home crowd clamoring for a victory over the Quakers' former coach.

Matt Conrad: The time is now to bring in the fans

Looking back through The Daily Pennsylvanian's archives, it's pretty easy to spot a pattern in the paper's sports columns: Every few months, some writer pens a lengthy piece begging the student body to support Penn's teams beyond basketball and football. Let's be honest - nobody really listens.

New York Ivies show up Tigers

By Matt Conrad Senior Staff Writer mlconrad@sas.upenn.edu With one weekend of league play under the Ancient Eight's collective belt, there have certainly been some surprises. But a new challenge for Harvard is no surprise to anyone: It's been inevitable since the season began.

Lions look for repeat shocker

Last time the Penn men's basketball team took the floor at Columbia's Levien Gymnasium, it was 7-0 in the Ivy League, having just completed a perfect run through the first half of the conference slate. Forty minutes later, the Quakers were 7-1 after a shocking 59-57 loss to the 1-7 Lions, in which Penn didn't score a point in the final 4:42 of the game.

Ten months ago, things were looking up for Brown basketball fans. And then John Chaney got involved. The Bears ended their 6-8 Ivy campaign on a high note, decisively beating Princeton and taking eventual league champion Penn to overtime. And with all five starters returning, led by standout junior forward Keenan Jeppesen (11.

With league play about to descend upon the Ancient Eight, contests over winter break gave one final look at Penn's conference rivals before the "real" season begins. A bit stingy. To get a sense of how the Princeton defense has been playing recently, one fact from this week says it all: Rice's Morris Almond entered Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday as the most prolific scorer in the nation, averaging a Division I-best 31.
