If you’re not talking about the fraternity party you went to Saturday night, Snapchatting pictures of the breathtaking campus or posting on Instagram with friends you made two hours prior, are you really having a good time in college? Jack Stokes (W '19) was pleased when he heard that Pret A Manger, a popular chain of sandwich shops, would be replacing Huntsman Hall's Bridge Cafe this fall. Being from Manhattan, where the chain has more than a dozen locations, Jack was familiar with the fast-casual locale. And because he had taken 2 full semesters of French (he claims to have taken another semester, but admits he withdrew halfway through the course), he knew how to pronounce "Pret A Manger" like a true Parisian. But once he got to campus, his excitement faded to disappointment—not in the food, but in the students.

There’s excitement and anticipation behind their cheers, for sure, but also — and this might just be me — an underlying exhaustion.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, a 1986 Wharton graduate with over two decades of experience in the Department of Justice, has been the subject of numerous headlines since he wrote a highly publicized statement recommending the firing of former FBI Director James Comey in May. A week after that memo, Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to head a special counsel investigation into the links between President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign and the Russian government's interference in the 2016 presidential election. Rosenstein has continued to expand the investigation even as Trump has dismissed the probe as a "a total fabrication" and "a witch hunt."

As I stand at the counter of a restaurant in Germany, counting out change, the proprietor notices I can’t quite speak the language and asks where I’m from. “Texas,” I say. Even here, there’s rarely a need to clarify — and sure enough, he nods knowingly. “George-Bush-Staat!”

Looking back on my first semester, I remember that it could not have started any better. My mother flew the 22 hours from Singapore with me to Philadelphia and we set up my room in New College House together. Penn’s campus looked majestic — walls dressed in a cloak of green, and aged arches caught in the golden rays of sunlight.
