In the wake of Hurricane Maria, nearly 400,000 Puerto Rican residents evacuated the island. 5,357 evacuees arrived in Philadelphia County — more than any other metropolitan area outside of Florida, the Bronx, and Massachusetts. Making friends — as a little kid, it was a breeze. Little me would spot another little girl or boy playing where I wanted to play. Maybe by the end of playtime, we'd dub each other best friends for life. Maybe we wouldn’t even remember each others’ names the next day. It didn’t matter. Former Penn student Blaze Bernstein went missing over winter break while visiting his family before being found dead in a park in Orange County, Calif. in January. Within weeks, Samuel Woodward, a former high school classmate of Bernstein, was arrested for his murder. Since then, prosecutors in the case have accused Woodward of killing Bernstein in a hate crime because the Penn student was Jewish and gay.
