Penn Engineering has announced the faculty recipients of the 2025 Student Choice awards.
Distributed annually to faculty who are nominated and selected by the Engineering undergraduate student body, the Student Choice awards honor a “dedication in teaching, mentorship and student advocacy,” according to the April 8 announcement on the Almanac. Faculty are eligible to receive five awards — each recognizing support of students and intellectual development.
This year’s recipient of the S. Reid Warren, Jr. Award, which “recognizes outstanding service in stimulating and guiding the intellectual and professional development of undergraduate students," was professor Deep Jariwala, who currently teaches “The Physics of Solid State Energy Devices." Students who nominated Jariwala noted his emphasis on a thorough understanding of the course material.
The Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award honors a faculty member who “embodies Penn’s missions of inquiry and discovery,” and was given to Bioengineering professor Russell Composto.
Composto’s work spans the principles of polymer science across a range of applications, from biopolymers to polymer physics. Students especially appreciated his mentorship within and outside the lab, including project design and navigating the field of academia.
Mechanical Engineering professor Dustyn Roberts received the Hatfield Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes “outstanding teaching ability, [and] dedication to innovative undergraduate instruction.” Students who nominated Roberts acknowledged her ability to make difficult material more accessible in their nominations.
The Michael L. Barrett and Traci Barrett Faculty Award for Student Advocacy — issued by the Underrepresented Students Advisory Board in honor of a faculty member who demonstrates a commitment to the community — was awarded to John Henry Towne Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics Robert Carpick.
In addition to his work in friction, adhesion, and lubrication at the nanoscale, students who nominated Carpick noted his role as a mentor and inspiration for pursuing academic goals.
Olga and Alberico Pompa Professor of Computer and Information Science Jonathan Smith received the Ford Motor Company Award for Faculty Advising, honoring his devotion to “helping students realize their educational, career, and personal goals.” Students emphasized Smith’s willingness to speak with students at length about their academic and professional paths.
Last year, Engineering faculty members Joseph Devietti, Douglas Jerolmack, Bomyi Lim, Shu Yang and Mark Licurse were honored as recipients of the 2024 Penn Engineering Student Choice Awards.
