Wednesday, April 9

Good morning, Penn.

Happy Wednesday! I hope you’re having a great week so far.

Penn community members protested federal research and education funding cuts outside Sen. Dave McCormick’s (R-Pa.) office yesterday, and the College of Arts and Sciences hosted its annual Stephen A. Levin Family Dean’s Forum, featuring bestselling author and journalist Nate Silver.

But first, several University faculty members, along with state and local politicians, spoke with The Daily Pennsylvanian to criticize the recent revocations of three Penn students’ visas.

Penn professors, Pa. politicians criticize student visa revocations

Several Penn faculty members and state and local politicians spoke with the DP to criticize recent visa revocations at Penn.

The federal government revoked “at least three” Penn students’ visas and terminated their immigration statuses, according to an email from International Student and Scholar Services sent on April 7.

The message stated that Penn learned of the changes to the students’ immigration statuses through a check of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program database. According to the ISSS email, the visa revocations were in relation to “immigration status violations and not connected to the 2024 campus protests.”

Over 300 students, faculty, and researchers at American universities have faced similar actions — with many reporting that they have not received direct notice from the federal government. Yesterday, a University spokesperson declined to comment on whether additional visas had been revoked.
