Wednesday, April 23

Good morning, Penn.

Happy Wednesday! I hope you got a chance to soak up some sun yesterday.

Penn President Larry Jameson co-signed a letter yesterday denouncing the federal government’s interference into higher education, and Penn motioned to dismiss a lawsuit from three former swimmers who alleged Title IX violations over Lia Thomas’ participation in the 2022 Ivy League championships.

But first, Penn updated its guidance for international students on Monday, addressing public safety and housing concerns on the International Student and Scholar Services’ “SEVIS Termination FAQ” website.

Penn updates guidance for international students amid ongoing visa revocations

Penn updated its guidance for international students on Monday, adding additional information for individuals whose immigration statuses have changed in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System.

The Daily Pennsylvanian previously reported that eight Penn affiliates had their visas revoked and immigration statuses terminated by the Department of State. Of the eight affiliates, seven had their SEVIS statuses terminated — including one undergraduate student, five graduate students, and one alumnus on a sponsored visa — according to a University spokesperson. One additional Penn affiliate had their visa revoked.

On April 21, Penn updated its “SEVIS Termination FAQ” website to address additional topics including public safety, academics, and housing for individuals who have been impacted by SEVIS terminations. The page — which was first launched by ISSS on April 6 — states that a SEVIS revocation indicates that an individual’s “F-1 or J-1 immigration record is no longer active.”

In 2018, the DP reported on Penn’s United Minorities Council’s annual Celebration of Cultures event, where students discussed the universality of food across cultures on couches in front of College Hall. Last week, the UMC hosted its annual intercultural fair, which was themed around Pokémon and featured food and student performances.

Whether it’s your little cousin spamming quotes in all the family group chat or your Tik Tok algorithm brimming with upcycled dank memes, Jack Black’s latest flick is clearly having a cultural impact that you’d have to be living under a rock to miss. But does it live up to its potential? According to Film & TV writer Liana Seale, “A Minecraft Movie” could either have been a nuanced comedy indirectly tackling the implications of artificial intelligence art on creative storytelling or a silly kids movie crammed full of in-your-face references, jingles, and fart jokes. The messy combination ultimately falls flat.
