Happy Monday! I hope you're looking forward to spring break as much as I am. I can't wait to be somewhere with more stable weather.

Penn honored the legacy of Julian Francis Abele, the University’s first Black architecture program graduate, at a dedication event last week, and formally recognized his contributions to the school as the designer of Eisenlohr Hall, the official residence of Penn's president. 

But first, The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke with Penn students and faculty about their reactions to the cuts in graduate admissions rates.

Penn students and faculty react to graduate admissions cuts

In exclusive interviews with The Daily Pennsylvanian, Penn students and faculty members expressed concern about the future of higher education following cuts to graduate admissions rates.

Marco Ruella, an assistant professor at the Perelman School of Medicine who specializes in CAR T-cell immunotherapies, said that most of his research receives funding from the NIH and the National Cancer Institute.

“We have the freedom to work, we have the space, we have the resources, but then we need to pay for the people,” Ruella said. “We need to pay for ourselves. We need to pay for the research that we do. If one of the major funding strategies was the NIH — and the NIH might reduce their ability to support — we might have to revisit the way we manage our labs.”

  Sophomore guard Sam Brown's historic 42 points — tied for the highest since 1989 — and senior center/forward Nick Spinoso hitting 1,000 points were highlights of Penn men's basketball's 92-87 victory at Columbia.  

  After a dominant victory over Dartmouth the previous day, Penn women's basketball fell 62-44 to Harvard, putting their Ivy Madness chances in jeopardy.

In 2023, the DP reported that Penn announced a 4% rise in the cost of attendance for the 2023-24 academic year. On Thursday, Penn announced a 3.7% increase in tuition for the 2025-26 academic year.
