The Daily Pennsylvanian examined submatriculation opportunities available to Penn undergraduates in Wharton and Penn Carey Law, and several elected officials criticized the University’s response to federal funding cuts and urged stronger action.
But first, former staff members from the recently shut down Penn Medicine Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity spoke to the DP about the legacy of their work and the necessity of inclusive practices moving forward.
Members of Penn Medicine’s former OIDE expressed disappointment over the dissolution of a decade’s worth of DEI initiatives they developed in interviews with the DP.
Ophthalmology professor and Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics fellow Eve Higginbotham served as the inaugural vice dean of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity at the Perelman School of Medicine from 2013-23. Higginbotham spoke with the DP about the University’s broad removal of DEI policies and practices, as well as Penn President Larry Jameson’s role in developing Penn Medicine DEI initiatives.
“I’m disappointed in the dissolution of the office because we did have a wonderful foundation,” Higginbotham said. “I just wonder if there was some opportunity to reframe the work going forward.”
Several elected officials expressed disapproval with both the Trump administration’s decision to freeze $175 million in federal funds to Penn and the University’s response in interviews with the DP.
Penn offers its undergraduates early admission pathways to the University’s graduate and professional schools, with higher acceptance rates than the general pool.
Penn announced the inaugural recipients of its Draw Down the Lightning grants, awarding funding to 12 interdisciplinary projects aimed at addressing global challenges.
Penn Medicine dismissed claims that it will acquire Crozer Health— which filed for bankruptcy in January — as “inaccurate.”
The Franklin Institute opened an 8,500-square-foot exhibit featuring Penn Medicine research and paying homage to the University’s historic and modern contributions to medicine.
