Freshman guard AJ Levine of Penn men’s basketball has entered the transfer portal, per an announcement on his social media on Tuesday.
Levine’s announcement comes a day after star sophomore guard Sam Brown entered the transfer portal and soon after Penn coach Steve Donhaue’s departure earlier this month.
Like Brown, Levine added that he has not ruled out a return to Penn, but he is planning on using the portal “in a way that maximizes my college experience as both a student and an athlete.”
In seasons prior, the Quakers have suffered major portal losses. Last year, then-freshman guard Tyler Perkins transferred to Villanova. In 2023, Ivy Player of the Year Jordan Dingle left Penn for St. John’s after finishing second in the nation in scoring average.
Levine played in 24 of 27 games this season, missing the last three due to an injury. He also started in 12 contests. Levine’s defensive skillset has been a difference-maker for the Red and Blue, most notably in a matchup against Princeton. Levine helped hold Princeton guard Xaivian Lee — an NBA prospect — to only 11 points. Lee averages 16.8 points per game. Levine leads the Quakers in steals with 26.
Levine told The Daily Pennsylvanian in an interview in February that one of his goals was to make the NCAA tournament during his time with Penn men’s basketball.
“March Madness — it’s gonna happen. I promise it’ll happen ... I won’t go my career without making March Madness.” Levine said.
