The pop-up will remain in the space until January 2026. Raxx Vintage Emporium, the flagship store, is located on 617 E. Passyunk Ave. in South Philadelphia.
Raxx Vintage Emporium store manager Vanessa Tejada told The Daily Pennsylvanian that a representative from the Penn reached out to the Raxx team in the hopes of establishing more “Philadelphia-based stores, businesses, local places to be part of the environment" near Penn.
“We want to keep clothing that has survived over decades to be reintroduced into the world. You want to buy something nice, make sure that it lived and has not polluted the planet,” Tejada said. “[Students] can be kind of engulfed in their own space and they don’t really venture outside of that, so to have these little introductions in their pockets helps them understand there’s more to this place than just going to school and going to bed.”
College sophomore Logan Yuhas expressed excitement with how close the store is to Penn's campus.
"It’s a concrete symbol of the new interest in vintage clothing," Yuhas added. "I think the world's shift to appreciating the mountains of clothes that already exist is both creatively and environmentally important."
“My favorite part about exploring [Philadelphia] is the flea market and thrifting scene. It’s very exciting to see that come closer to campus,” said College sophomore Daphne Hicyilmaz.
In 2017, Raxx had worked with University officials to create a University City Raxx pop-up at 3661 Walnut Street for one year. Both pop-ups have included items from Raxx’s inventory of vintage clothing and jewelry from the 1960s to the 1990s and early 2000s.
Until February, the new Raxx pop-up had only undergone what Tejada described as a “very soft opening,” accepting only cash, Venmo, or PayPal while settling into the space.
The store had its grand opening on Feb. 1, and added fitting rooms and WiFi to enable credit card payments the week prior according to posts from the Raxx West Instagram account.
The pop-up is currently open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm. Extended hours are offered at the flagship Emporium store location.
