As the preseason winds down for the Penn men’s and women’s lacrosse programs, the Quakers are headed into their first games with high expectations as six players have received Preseason All-America recognition, including three who have earned places on the First Teams.
The USA Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason All-America First Team features two stalwarts of the Red and Blue’s defense with goaltender Emmett Carrol and defender Brendan Lavelle. Other Quakers who received honors include honorable mention nods to senior attacker Tynan Walsh and senior attacker Cam Rubin.
On the women’s side, the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association also released their Lacrosse Preseason Women's Division I Media All-American teams. Penn women’s lacrosse senior midfielder Anna Brandt earned herself a spot on the First Team, while senior attacker Erika Chung nabbed honorable mention honors.
This is not these seniors’ first rodeo with these awards.
Carroll and Lavelle, who have played together since their high school careers, are both veterans of these honors since their 2023 and 2022 seasons, respectively. Carroll received an honorable mention All-Ivy in 2023 after starting in every game of the season as Penn’s goalie, and he continued to collect numerous other recognitions last season, including USA Lacrosse Second Team All-American and USILA Scholar All-American.
Lavelle has mirrored his teammate’s accomplishments since his season in 2022 where he was rewarded with an honorable mention from USA Lacrosse Magazine and Second Team All-Ivy, and his glory never ceased as he gained First Team All-Ivy in 2023.
The 2024 season was outstanding for both Carroll and Lavelle as they raked in more notable honors, ranging from All Ivy-League Tournament team spots for both to a Tewaaraton Award nomination for Carroll. The Tewaaraton Award recognizes the top men’s and women’s NCAA players, and upon receiving First Team honors in the preseason, the potential for a Penn Tewaaraton winner is feasible again this season.
For the women’s side, Anna Brandt’s award of First Team Preseason All-American in anticipation of her final season raises high hopes and expectations for the Maryland native. Her career at Penn began extremely well during her freshman year as she was the only freshman to start in all 15 games in the season, and she ended her lucrative season with a place on the Second Team All-Ivy. She also shined in her sophomore and junior seasons with College Sports Communicators Academic All-District and Third Team Inside Lacrosse All-America honors.
Prospectively, these honors indicate the exciting season that these seniors will provide to close out their careers repping the Red and Blue. With Carroll and Lavelle ranked in the top ten of Inside Lacrosse’s Top 50 Players for 2025 alongside Brandt’s third place ranking for all-time goals in the program, the 2025 men’s and women’s lacrosse seasons will undoubtedly bring greatness to Franklin Field. The only question might be how these seniors’ teammates will equate to their preeminence.
The wait is almost over as the Penn lacrosse seasons begin on Feb. 15 for the men’s team and Feb. 16 for women’s team. Penn men’s lacrosse will take on Georgetown in Washington at 12 p.m., and Penn women’s lacrosse will battle for supremacy over Philadelphia as it takes on Drexel away at 12 p.m.
