Welcome back to Quaker Nation, Penn's premier sports newsletter.

It's been nothing short of an exciting week for sports at Penn and the city of Philadelphia, with the Quakers claiming some wins over the weekend and the Eagles celebrating their Super Bowl LIX victory. 

In this week's edition, we're spotlighting the second half of Ivy League play for Penn men's and women's basketball and highlighting the season openers for men's and women's lacrosse. 

Without further ado, let’s dive into the latest stories from The Daily Pennsylvanian Sports:

Breaking 1,000 points: Senior guard Stina Almqvist of Penn women's basketball broke the elusive 1,000-point barrier on Saturday — leading the Quakers to a win over Brown

Five straight losses: Penn men's basketball is trudging through its second half of Ivy play, extending their losing streak to five after two losses this past weekend. 

World Champions: Penn and the City of Philadelphia celebrated the Eagles' Super Bowl win last Sunday on Broad Street and on Friday at the parade.

Lia Thomas’ NCAA title, Ivy League records under threat following letter from Department of Education

 
Former Penn swimmer and transgender woman Lia Thomas' accolades, including an NCAA championship and multiple Ivy League records, are under threat after the Department of Education sent a letter to the NCAA president advocating for the reallocation of awards won by transgender athletes.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Stina Almqvist hits 1,000 points in dominant win over Brown for Penn women’s basketball


With her family in attendance all the way from Sweden, senior guard Stina Almqvist claimed her 1,000th career point and then some in a victory over Brown. With two wins over the weekend, Penn women's basketball is in a promising position to make the Ivy Madness Tournament in next month. 
 
 


WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Impossible to ‘Block’: No. 12 Penn women’s lacrosse wins off career day from Keeley Block


Penn's women's lacrosse opened up their season with a big win over University City neighbor Drexel. Senior midfielder Anna Brandt shined and scored two goals — moving closer to breaking the program record for career goals.  
 

MEN'S LACROSSE

Penn men’s lacrosse drops season opener in 8-6 defensive duel against Georgetown


Similar to last year, Penn men's lacrosse fell 8-6 to Georgetown in its season opener. However, senior defender Brendan Lavelle and senior goalkeeper Emmet Carroll brought some bright spots to the game.

BASKETBALL
Forged in Manasquan and sharpened at Penn: Katie Collins is ready for the competition

A star is in the making: freshman forward Katie Collins has dominated the competition, having already accrued six Ivy League Rookie of the Week awards as a consistent starter in just her first year. Collins' rise to the top is nothing short of great.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (6-16, 2-7 Ivy) holds a five-game losing streak after dropping in the final seconds against Yale [READ MORE]

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (13-10, 4-6 Ivy) defeated Yale and Brown at home in back-to-back victories. [READ MORE]

MEN'S FENCING (20-6) finished the Ivy Tournament 2-2 and are set to battle Temple on Feb. 23. 

WOMEN'S FENCING (19-11) finished the Ivy Tournament 3-3 and are also set to battle Temple on Feb. 23. 

GYMNASTICS scored their season-best of 195.150 at Southern Connecticut State and look to compete at the Ivy Classic on Feb. 23. [READ MORE]

NO. 1 MEN'S SQUASH (16-0, 6-0 Ivy) went undefeated in the regular Ivy League season and is set to play at Drexel on Feb. 20.

NO. 7 WOMEN'S SQUASH (12-3, 5-1 Ivy) steamrolled Princeton on Feb. 9 to take on Drexel on Feb. 20, which will be their last game before the CSA National Championship.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (4-6, 1-6 Ivy) continue their preparation for the Ivy League Championships starting Feb. 26 in Rhode Island.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (8-4, 3-4 Ivy) look to compete in the Ivy League Championships from Feb. 19-22 in New Jersey.

TRACK AND FIELD broke multiple program records during a double meet weekend. Junior hurdler Shane Gardner, currently ranked first in the Ivy League, recorded 7.83 in the preliminaries and 7.80 in the semifinals of the men's 60m hurdles to break a program record. 

MEN'S TENNIS (8-3) finished fourth at the 2025 ECAC Championship, falling 1-4 in the third place match against Cornell this past Sunday.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (4-4) is set to face the University of Central Florida on Feb. 23, in Orlando.

MEN'S LACROSSE (0-1) lost their season opener with a score of 6-8 in a defensive battle at Georgetown. [READ MORE]

WOMEN'S LACROSSE (1-0) opened their season with a gritty 15-11 win at Drexel. [READ MORE]

WRESTLING (10-5, 4-1 Ivy) won 31-7 against Princeton, a breath of fresh air after two straight losses. 

SOFTBALL (1-1) cancelled their game at Elon University this past Saturday due to weather. 

STAT OF THE WEEK: Penn women's basketball freshman forward Katie Collins had a career-high 21 points in a win against Yale this past Friday, along with 10 rebounds, four assists, five blocks, and two steals.
