Around 100 pro-Palestinian activists attended a rally and march on Penn’s campus calling on the University to divest and halt gentrification in Philadelphia yesterday.
The demonstration, which took place on Presidents Day, lasted around an hour and a half and began at 4:30 p.m. It began at the intersection of 34th and Walnut streets — outside of Hill College House — and ended at the intersection of 40th and Walnut streets, behind Gutmann College House. The rally was publicized through a statement on Instagram and featured speakers from various pro-Palestinian organizations.
“Here in West Philly, Penn displaces and polices Philadelphians,” the statement read. “Through their private police force and their never-ending hunger for more real estate, Penn’s greed and power harm us all.”
In 2019, the DP analyzed how Penn and Drexel responded to an increased demand for housing. This year, the Mason on Chestnut, an off-campus residence near Penn’s campus, faced another round of city code violations as its owners allege the building will be converted into a homeless shelter.
