Masala Kitchen and Carter’s Pizza and Beer recently opened new locations in University City.
Founded in 2013, Masala Kitchen has an established presence in the Philadelphia food scene, with two existing locations at Rittenhouse Square and Midtown Village. Boasting a mission to “share the true essence of Indian food culture in the USA," the chain offers a variety of Indian fast-casual food, including platters, biryani, and freshly-made Indian yogurt beverages, along with their signature kati rolls.
The new University City venue is located at the intersection of 34th and Sansom Street. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday, 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
In late 2023, Masala Kitchen announced plans to open a new location in University City in the spring of 2024, hoping to market to students who are unable to travel to Masala’s other locations.
“We have a lot of customers coming from University City, and because they are students they cannot come every day,” said owner Vaishal Soni to Philadelphia Today.
The restaurant then delayed its opening until Sept. 2024, and it finally celebrated its grand opening on Dec. 30. In addition to dine-in, it also offers online ordering, delivery, and catering services.
The new location of Carter’s Pizza and Beer can be found at Hamilton Court, at the intersection of 39th and Chestnut Street. While pizza is the restaurant’s mainstay, it offers a variety of American and Philadelphian food, including cheesesteaks, hoagies, salads, chicken wings, onion rings, and smash burgers. It also offers twists on established foods, such as bacon ranch fries, steak pizza, along with fusion dishes, such as Korean bulgogi cheesesteak and Korean bulgogi fries.
Carter’s is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday.
The restaurant has partnered with Slice, an online platform for independent pizzerias, to offer online ordering and delivery. It also hosts free weekly trivia nights on Saturdays at 6 p.m.
