Good morning, Penn.

Welcome back to Quaker Nation!

I'm Valeri Guevarra, and I’ll be your anchor this week for our first regular edition and my first edition as anchor of Quaker Nation — and what a week for sports at Penn (and in Philadelphia)!

This week’s edition has a mix of sports news and recaps of victories, as well as tough losses for the Red and Blue. Without further ado, let's jump into the latest stories from DP Sports:

Sticking to tradition: Last Tuesday, the Ivy League announced that the conference will opt out of the House v. NCAA antitrust settlement, continuing its tradition of not paying student-athletes.

Protecting women’s sports: The Trump administration and the United States are advancing their agenda to ban transgender athletes from women's sports — a controversy that gained national attention after 2022 College graduate Lia Thomas participated in NCAA women’s swimming in the 2021-22 season.

One up, one down: Sophomore guard Sam Brown of Penn men’s basketball led the team to a big win over Columbia on Saturday, while the women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss against Columbia on the road.

Ivy League set to opt out of House v. NCAA antitrust settlement

In a controversial decision, the Ivy League will opt out of a pending NCAA settlement that is set to provide direct compensation to former and current college student-athletes, according to an email sent to Ivy League student-athletes on Jan. 21. This means Penn's athletic programs “will continue to not provide student-athletes with revenue sharing allocations, athletics scholarships, or direct [name, image, and likeness] payments,” according to the email.
