Happy Tuesday, Penn! My name is Finn Ryan, and you’ll see me in your inbox each Tuesday morning this semester. I hope you kept warm during the long weekend — and found some company; this weather can be pretty ice-olating. 

The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke with three new students in the Class of 2029 about their journey to Penn, and the Philadelphia 76ers scrapped controversial plans for a new arena in Center City, choosing to stay in South Philadelphia.

But first, 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump was sworn in as president of the United States for the second time yesterday.

Trump returns to power by calling for a ‘new age’ of American society in second inaugural speech

Yesterday, 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term as president of the United States. In his inauguration speech, Trump called for drastic change and an “America first” policy.

Trump accused former President and Benjamin Franklin Presidential Professor of Practice Joe Biden’s administration of ushering American society into an era that is “broken and seemingly in complete disrepair.” Trump also promised to reverse many policies from the Biden administration, including the Green New Deal.

The inauguration took place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which Trump acknowledged by expressing gratitude for his Black and Hispanic voters for their record turnout in the 2024 presidential election.

  The DP spoke with three students who were admitted through the Early Decision Program to the Class of 2029 about their upcoming time at Penn.

  Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced at a press conference that the Philadelphia 76ers arena would remain in South Philadelphia, abandoning plans to move to a new arena in Center City.

  Penn will likely face continued congressional scrutiny as U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) became the chair of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

  2017 College graduate Jared Fenton was recently recognized on Forbes’ 2025 30 Under 30 list in the social impact category. 

  Penn Medicine and businessperson Mark Cuban have partnered to address price markups within the pharmaceutical industry.

In 2021, the DP reported that Joe Biden planned to join the Penn community with his “cancer moonshot” initiative at Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center. This year, Biden mentioned in an interview that Penn is seeking to continue their relationship by hosting his presidential library.
