Happy first day of classes, Penn! Today, a new team of students takes the helm here at The Daily Pennsylvanian. We are excited to introduce our new team of newsletter anchors over the next couple of weeks, and we'll be bringing the top stories from Penn's campus to your inbox every morning when Penn classes are in session. 

Penn has yet to settle in an antitrust lawsuit over financial aid, and a local art festival was canceled by organizers after Penn requested the omission of "politically sensitive" art.

But first, the Saxbys location at 40th and Locust streets will close its doors later this year to make room for a Penn Dental Medicine clinical space expansion.

Penn Saxbys to close in May

The Saxbys at 40th and Locust streets will close its doors in May this year after Penn Dental announced plans to expand its clinical spaces.

Penn Dental will renovate the space within the Robert Schattner Center, which has been leased to Saxbys since 2015, as part of an expansion process driven by the 2021 opening of the Care Center for Persons with Disabilities. The expansion will be supported by capital funding and fundraising efforts set to take place during the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years.

“The conversion of the coffee shop space is vital to the health and well-being of our patients,” a Penn Dental spokesperson wrote in a statement to the DP.

  Penn is one of six universities that has not settled in a 2022 antitrust lawsuit, which is seeking around $2 billion in damages, that alleges Penn and 16 other universities colluded to decrease financial aid.

  An annual craft vendor event on Penn’s campus was canceled by organizers in December 2024 after the University requested the omission of “politically sensitive” art.

  Interim Penn President Larry Jameson reflected on his first year leading the University and the status of initiatives introduced during his tenure in a recent interview.

In 2012, 1920 Commons flooded, and the building was forced to be evacuated due to water spillage. In December 2024, Penn announced that Commons would undergo an extensive renovation over the next several years — its first since being constructed in 1971 — which will include significant interior and exterior structural improvements.
