The estate of William Levy, a 1957 Wharton graduate and 1964 University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School graduate, donated over $42 million to support undergraduate aid in Penn’s College of Arts and Sciences.
According to Penn Today, Levy’s contribution will fund the education of undergraduate students in the College who seek “a desire to contribute to society.” The estate donation — which brings his lifetime contributions to Penn to $50 million — will enable the William J. Levy Endowed Scholarship Fund to support over 40 students annually.
The William J. Levy Endowed Scholarship was first established two decades ago, Interim Penn President Larry Jameson said in the announcement. He told Penn Today that he was “deeply grateful” for the donation, adding that the gift would “uplift future leaders” with “a proven commitment to their communities.”
“During his life, Bill Levy was a Penn student, alumnus, and dedicated friend to Penn,” Jameson said. “[H]e shared our belief that service-oriented leadership is crucial to making headway on the great challenges of our time.”
Levy served in the United States Navy for two years after graduating from Penn with an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School. Following his time at Penn Carey Law, he worked in the Philadelphia Public Defenders office and the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington, D.C. before founding the private investment firm of Warren-Potomac, Inc.
“Bill’s gift will directly impact the lives of undergraduate students at Penn for decades to come, ushering in a new generation of service-oriented leaders that will help change the world for the better,” School of Arts and Sciences dean Steven Fluharty told Penn Today.
Levy passed away in his New York home on July 27, 2023 at age 88.
