The Wharton School’s digital learning platform Wharton Online recently launched a new course on the implementation of ChatGPT in education.
The course, called AI in Education: Leveraging ChatGPT for Teaching, was created in collaboration with OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company responsible for the creation of ChatGPT. Participants will learn how to use technology for more effective teaching while simultaneously helping their students to develop AI skills.
The course was announced on Nov. 21 and began on Dec. 1 in the form of four self-paced modules. The content primarily focuses on exploring new concepts in generative AI, crafting AI prompts, and integrating AI into school assignments while maintaining academic integrity.
The announcement comes over a year after Wharton’s launch of the “AI at Wharton” initiative, which seeks to encourage research on AI’s business applications and societal impact. Wharton’s partnership with OpenAI as part of its Wharton AI & Analytics Initiative, which started earlier this year, marked the first collaboration between OpenAI and a business school.
Ethan Mollick, a Wharton professor and one of TIME Magazine’s most influential people in AI of 2024, will lead the class alongside pedagogical specialist Lilach Mollick.
Leah Belsky, vice president and general manager of education at OpenAI, said in the announcement that it has been “remarkable” to see Wharton welcome the usage of OpenAI.
“Ethan and Lilach Mollick in particular have been a lighthouse for the education sector, experimenting, researching, and sharing insights into how educators can use AI to accelerate learning,” Belsky said. “It’s exciting to think about the wave of educators and students who will learn from them through this Wharton Online course on Coursera.”
Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate from Wharton Online and OpenAI. The certificate will be issued by Coursera, the online-learning platform used for Wharton Online courses.
