Penn's ice skating rink was named Philadelphia's Best Ice Rink for 2024 in Metro Philly’s fourth annual “Winners Guide.”
The Class of 1923 Ice Skating Rink in Penn Park serves as the home rink for the University's men's and women's hockey teams, the Penn Figure Skating Club, and numerous other teams in the city. The recognition was part of Metro Philly's list of businesses, organizations, and services voted the city's best with ballots cast by over 100,000 readers.
The rink offers a variety of public programs, including open and free skates, hockey drop-in hours, and an all-ages learn-to-skate program. It will host several special events this winter, including RockyFest in collaboration with the Philadelphia Visitors Center and performances by the contemporary ice-skating company Le Patin Libre.
Ray Bates, Executive Director of Penn Business Services, who oversees the rink, told Penn Business Services News that they were honored and grateful for the designation.
“Director Rob Harkins, Assistant Manager Bill Richards, and Operations Manager Mike Petrocelli are passionate about the quality of the rink’s programming, facilities, and guest experiences — and it shows through everything they do," Bates said. "This award is a testament to their hard work and dedication, as well as the unwavering support of the communities we serve.”
The Drexel Dragons men’s hockey team, the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, St. Joseph’s Prep Hockey, and numerous adult hockey leagues use the rink in addition to Penn groups. In February 2025, the rink will host the Colonial States Collegiate Hockey Playoffs and the Intercollegiate Figure Skating Southeast Sectional.
Earlier this year, the rink introduced a self-serve Pro Shop vending machine, which allows skaters to purchase equipment like skate laces, mouthguards, and hockey sticks on-site.
College first year Rose Marone said her family has been going to Penn's public skates for 13 years.
"The Penn rink really helps build community and foster relationships. Over these years, I have seen so many families and friends having such a great time doing one of the quintessential winter activities,” she said.
Marone joined the Penn Figure Skating Club upon arriving at the University.
“Watching the Penn Figure Skating Club practice during my childhood inspired me to dream of attending a university with a vibrant skating culture," Marone said. "Now, I’m thrilled to be preparing for my first ice skating show at this very rink."
Penn Ice Rink wrote in a press release that "whether you're here for open skate, hockey night, or a special event, you're part of the Penn Ice Rink family.”
