In Penn wrestling’s season-opener in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at Freedom High School on Sunday, Nov. 10, senior Nick Incontrera added to his resume with a Journeymen title.
Coming into the season, Incontrera was ranked as the No. 9 best wrestler in the 174-pound weight class for NCAA Division I wrestling according to FloWrestling. The recognition as a top-10 athlete in his category comes after a season where he qualified for the NCAA tournament and made the Second Team All-Ivy for the second straight year.
In his last and final year with the Red and Blue, Incontrera has picked up right where he left off. At the Journeymen Classic, Incontrera cruised his way to the final in the 174A bracket after taking down North Carolina State's Matty Singleton with an 11-2 decision and Illinois’ Danny Braunagel with an 8-5 decision.
There, Incontrera took the mat against Cornell’s Simon Ruiz, who came into the season as the No. 12 best wrestler in NCAA Division I in the 174-pound weight class. Incontrera was able to handle his business with a 6-2 decision to earn his first career Journeymen title.
For his dominance at the meet, Incontrera was named the Ivy League Wrestler of the Week.
Outside of Incontrera, things are looking good for the Red and Blue on the wrestling mats. At the event, Penn wrestling saw 20 other athletes place in the top six within their respective weight-class brackets. This group is led by senior Ryan Miller and first year Reed Fullmer, who also came No. 1 at the tournament, finishing at the top of the 133B and 165E brackets, respectively.
The Quakers also saw a handful of No. 2 finishes, including senior CJ Composto in 141A, sophomore Evan Mougalian in 141B, first year Cross Wasilewski in 149A, sophomore Jude Swisher in 157A, junior Andy Troczynski in 165C, freshman Nate Taylor in 184C, and sophomore Zach Delsanter in 285C.
Penn wrestling will take to the mats again when it welcomes Northern Colorado to the Palestra this upcoming Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12 p.m.
