Almost half of Penn undergraduate students were matched with romantic or platonic pairs through the Penn Marriage Pact, and President Joe Biden and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) visited Pennsylvania ahead of the 2024 election. 

But first, the executive committee of the Penn chapter of the American Association of University Professors released a public statement rebuking the University's temporary guidelines regarding on-campus events and demonstrations.

Faculty group criticizes new demonstration guidelines

In an Oct. 30 statement, the Executive Committee of Penn’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors released a 2,300-word condemnation of the University's Temporary Guidelines on Campus Events and Demonstrations.

The statement describes the policies, which were implemented by the University in June, as an “attempt by the central administration to strip faculty, staff, and students” of rights “necessary to education and to democracy itself.”

In 2022, 40% of Penn undergraduates — 4,235 students — participated in Penn Marriage Pact during its third year on campus. This year, 4,935 participated in the matching program, which utilizes a questionnaire and algorithm to pair students.
