Good morning, Penn.


Rain cooled down campus last night and cleared smoke from ongoing wildfires in southern New Jersey. Also, a University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School graduate lost his reelection campaign for U.S. Congress in Pennsylvania, and Penn's Biology Department will study climate change and plant performance as part of a new center. 

But first, a group of students rallied outside Penn Hillel on Sunday to call for more media attention on acts of antisemitism in Philadelphia and abroad.

Student rally calls for media focus on antisemitic attacks

Around 30 students gathered outside Hillel on Sunday to call for greater media attention to recent instances of antisemitism around the world, including the recent attacks on a Philadelphia synagogue and on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam.

The rally, which was organized by Penn Israel Public Affairs Committee and Hillel, also aimed to spread awareness about Israelis who have been held hostage in Gaza since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

  Smoke from wildfires covered Philadelphia skies in a thick haze on Sunday, causing unhealthy air quality in some parts of the region. 

  U.S. Rep. and 1986 Penn Carey Law School graduate Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.) lost his reelection campaign to Rob Bresnahan, increasing the likelihood of a Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives. 

 Penn's Biology Department has launched the Plant Adaptability and Resilience Center, with the goal of enhancing plant performance in the face of climate change.

  Perelman School of Medicine researchers received an $11 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to support research on the correlation between chemical exposure and Alzheimer's disease.

In 2016, two days after the first election of former President and 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump,  faculty members of the Political Science Department discussed the shock of Trump’s victory, which exit polls did not predict.

Professor Daniel Hopkins explained the importance of swing states including Pennsylvania in Trump's election. After Trump's victory in his third presidential campaign last week, the DP spoke with Penn professors and polling experts who pointed to voter concerns with the economy and inflation as key factors in the election's outcome.
