Penn Medicine has appointed Lisa Bellini the executive vice dean for the Perelman School of Medicine and senior vice president of Academic Affairs for the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
In her new roles, Bellini will support the foundation of Penn Medicine's academic and working environment by focusing on faculty affairs and professional development. She will also play a key role in implementing Penn Medicine’s strategic plan, "Serving a Changing World."
One goal of the strategic plan involves advancing care for Penn Medicine employees the same way patient care is advanced. Bellini will help implement, scale, and spread Penn COBALT — a mental health and wellness platform for healthcare workers.
Bellini will also oversee the integration of Penn and the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, as well as chair the PSOM Education Mission with a focus on improving the continuum of medical education through graduate medical education.
Bellini came to Penn as part of the internal medicine residency program and joined the faculty in 1996.
Throughout her 25 years at Penn, Bellini has held several education leadership roles, including Internal Medicine Program director and associate dean for GME. Prior to her new appointment, Bellini served as the vice chair of Education and Inpatient Services for the Department of Medicine, where she oversaw the undergraduate and graduate medical education programs in the department.
Bellini also serves as the director of GME programs for the Vingroup-Penn Alliance in Vietnam, which focuses on strengthening residency programs in internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery at Vietnam's VinUniversity.
She has also served on a number of national committees, including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the National Academy of Medicine, The American Board of Internal Medicine, and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Bellini has also been granted several awards for her work in medical education and research, including the Penn Pearls, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, the lifetime achievement award from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, and the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teachers Award. Her research involves medical education with a focus on health and wellbeing of residents and faculty.
According to a press release from Penn Medicine, her interest in medical education stems from the belief that rigorous study is necessary to "identify the best tools and methods to predict competency and train the next generation of education leaders."
