Good morning, Penn.

Two Democratic senators spoke to college students in Philadelphia during a campaign stop focused on turning out young voters in the 2024 election, and the Philadelphia Writing Project at the Penn Graduate School of Education is introducing a new initiative that focuses on the histories of Black youth in Philadelphia through a living archive.

But first, Penn’s Division of Public Safety told The Daily Pennsylvanian that last Friday's search of an off-campus residence was in connection to an ongoing criminal vandalism investigation — and that Interim Penn President Larry Jameson was "not involved" in the decision.

Off-campus search connected to vandalism investigation

Penn's raid of an off-campus residence home to pro-Palestinian activists was in connection to an ongoing criminal vandalism investigation — and Interim President Larry Jameson was "not involved" in the decision to search the property, the University said on Thursday.

The search — which took place on the morning of Oct. 18 and was publicly disclosed on social media by Penn Students Against the Occupation of Palestine on the evening of Oct. 21 — followed Penn's obtaining of a search warrant which was reviewed by the Philadelphia District Attorney's office and approved by a bail commissioner.

“Any legal action taken by the UPPD is based on the violation of laws in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, not the policies of the university,” Vice President of Penn's Division of Public Safety Kathleen Shields Anderson wrote in a statement to the DP.

Other reports have also revealed new details about the circumstances of the search.

COLUMNIST MAX ANNUNZIATA argues that, despite differences of opinion on pro-Palestinian protests and the University’s response to them, our community should recognize the suppression of a vigil as amoral.
