Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine recently appointed two new associate deans to oversee clinical operations at its veterinary hospitals.

Brady Beale, an associate professor of ophthalmology and Ryan Hospital’s director and chief medical officer, was appointed as the associate dean of clinical enterprise. Barbara Dallap-Schaer, a professor of surgery and emergency and critical care medicine, and hospital director of New Bolton Center, was appointed associate dean for clinical education and operations for New Bolton Center.

Penn Vet serves a diverse population of animals at its two campuses: Ryan Veterinary Hospital at 39th and Spruce streets and New Bolton Center in Chester County, PA. Ryan Hospital offers primary care for dogs, cats, and other domestic animals as well as a 24-hour emergency service, and receives more than 34,600 patient visits annually. New Bolton Center, located on a 700-acre campus, cares for livestock and farm animals and has one of the largest animal hospitals in the nation.

Beale graduated from Penn Vet in 2002, where she alsocompleted her internship. She has worked with the New England Aquarium, The Maryland Zoo, and is the consulting ophthalmologist for the Philadelphia Zoo. Beale also runs a website that shares inspiring stories of blind animals.

As associate dean of clinical enterprise, Beale will oversee management and operations at Ryan Hospital. Her role will include developing strategic plans, delivering patient-centered care that aligns with clinical training standards, and advancing clinical research and trials.

Dallap-Schaer, a 1994 Penn Vet graduate, is board-certified by both the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. She will oversee the strategic direction, veterinary education, and clinical rotation experience for the New Bolton Center.

"These new appointments ensure the development and continued success of the school’s small and large animal hospitals and clinical services, and support Penn Vet’s compelling vision for the future of veterinary medicine," the Penn Almanac announcement read.

Gilbert S. Khan Dean of Veterinary Medicine, Andrew Hoffman, announced the appointment of the two associate deans. Hoffman, whose tenure began in 2018, is currently under consideration for reappointment to a second term.
