Penn Provost John Jackson Jr. announced the appointment of Wharton professor Jules van Binsbergen as the new Anthony L. Davis Director of the Joseph H. Lauder Institute for Management and International Studies this summer.
The Lauder Institute, which was founded in 1983 as part of Wharton, offers a joint degree program combining a master's degree in International Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences and either a MBA from Wharton or JD from Penn Carey Law. The former Director, Dr. Felix Zandman Professor in International Management Martine Haas, announced in the spring that she would step down from the role.
In the June 25 announcement of van Binsbergen's appointment, Jackson described van Binsbergen's as "an award-winning teacher and researcher whose work embodies the goals of the Lauder Institute to look globally, engage locally, and act responsibly." He added that the Lauder Institute's mission is made more important by In Principle and Practice, Penn's campus-wide strategic framework.
Ronald Lauder, the chair of the Lauder Institute Board of Governors, wrote in the announcement that he was "delighted" to welcome van Binsbergen as the institute's director.
“Jules is uniquely qualified to lead the Institute to the next level of excellence for what is, without a doubt, the preeminent program for international business education and leadership," he wrote. "We look forward to our collaboration with Jules and the entire Lauder team, as well as the University, to promote even greater innovation in the coming years.”
Van Binsbergen has conducted theoretical and empirical research on issues related to corporate finance that have been included in journals such as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Finance, and the Journal of Monetary Economics, according to the announcement. He is also a research associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research and a research fellow for the Centre for Economic Policy Research.
Van Binsbergen is also the co-host of the podcast All Else Equal: Making Better Decisions, in which he discusses decision-making strategy with global business leaders.
