Good morning, Penn.

Philadelphia is buzzing with excitement for tonight’s presidential debate, and I am buzzing with excitement for this morning’s newsletter. Follow the DP online and on social media for our coverage of how campus experiences the debate.

Penn was ranked the fourth-worst school for free speech by a national nonprofit, and a College sophomore called for the University to address antisemitism on campus at a press conference organized by the American Jewish Committee.

But first, controversial University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School professor Amy Wax has once again invited white nationalist Jared Taylor to lecture in her class.

Wax set to host white nationalist for third year

Taylor’s appearance last year sparked protests and a schoolwide email from Penn Carey Law Dean Sophia Lee addressing the boundaries of academic freedom.

Wax, who has maintained that her actions do not warrant discipline, is also set to speak at a November conference alongside multiple people who have reportedly espoused white supremacist, neo-Nazi, and racist views — including a former lawyer for the Ku Klux Klan.

In 2019, then-Penn Carey Law Dean Ted Ruger announced new initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion after a summer featuring controversy surrounding potential discipline for professor Amy Wax.

Today, the DP reported that Amy Wax is inviting white supremacist Jared Taylor to guest lecture in her class, titled “Conservative and Political Legal Thought.” She will also be presenting alongside individuals who have previously espoused racist and neo-Nazi views at a conference in Tennessee.
