Good morning, Penn.


Happy Tuesday, and here's hoping your first day of classes wasn't too strenuous. 

University City is welcoming several new businesses this fall — including the long-awaited opening of Van Leeuwen — and Penn's student political groups held a debate over the weekend.

But first, former Penn President Amy Gutmann is returning to the University as a professor in the Annenberg School for Communication.

Former President Amy Gutmann returns to Penn

Former Penn President Amy Gutmann will return to Penn and begin teaching in the Annenberg School for Communication next academic year.

Gutmann, who stepped down from the Penn presidency in 2022 to serve as the United States ambassador to Germany, has returned to Penn's faculty. She wrote to The Daily Pennsylvanian that she will be on sabbatical this year.


She originally became Penn's president in 2004 and served for 18 years, the longest term in the University's history. Gutmann announced that she would be returning to the United States in May.

  Penn's resident advisor union is alleging retaliation from College Houses and Academic Services for continued unionization efforts as they look ahead to continued bargaining this year.  

  A new pizza chain and a custom candle shop are among the new retail options near Penn's campus this fall. Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is now expected to open next month.

  Former Penn Admissions Dean Lee Stetson passed away on July 31 at the age of 83. He served at Penn for 29 years. 

  Penn's Government and Politics Association hosted a debate between Penn College Republicans and Penn Democrats over whether Kamala Harris or 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump is the best choice for the presidency.

 Interim Penn President Larry Jameson welcomed students back to campus and addressed open expression in an email to the community last week.

In 2018, the DP reported that Penn women's soccer had been ranked second in that year's Ivy League preseason poll. The 2024 season has gotten off to an inauspicious start for the Quakers, as they fell to Villanova and Drexel in their first two matches of the year.
