Good luck with the first day of classes, Penn! As first-year students learn that Locust Walk gets a little busy around 10:15 a.m., we've got a packed newsletter to help you navigate campus like a pro.
Welcome back to DP Daybreak, bringing you the top news stories every day from the University's paper of record. Let's start with Convocation.
Interim President Larry Jameson, in his first Convocation address since being appointed, spoke to first years of their "solemn responsibility" as members of the University community. Administrators acknowledged the year of demonstrations and turmoil that has faced Penn's campus while stressing the need to embrace differing viewpoints and avoid polarization.
The University tradition, held for the second year in a row at Franklin Field after it was interrupted by protests on College Green in 2022, proceeded without disruption. It featured a performance by the South Asian a capella group Penn Masala, hopes for "good vibes" for the Class of 2028, and an extended boxing metaphor from Penn's dean of admissions.
Our photo team fanned out across campus — and into Philadelphia — to capture the Class of 2028's New Student Orientation. We saw the Phillie Phanatic, a golf cart motorcade escorting the interim president, and a new civil dialogue-focused event at the National Constitution Center — launched after recommendations from Penn's presidential task forces.
And of course, the new class got their photo moment on Franklin Field, spelling out a giant "2028" in bright red T-shirts. Take a look.
Two House committees asked Penn to detail how it plans to address campus protests in the upcoming academic year, citing concerns of antisemitism on campus.
The chair of the School of Dental Medicine's periodontics department has left his position after being on leave following the DP's reporting on sexual misconduct allegations.
Through the Annenberg School for Communication, 10 Penn students attended the Democratic National Convention last week, including two of our photographers. Here's what they witnessed, from a massive balloon drop to a surge of excitement about Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign.
TODAY IN DP HISTORY
Photo from Penn Today
In 2019, students living on campus near the construction site of New College House West said they were being shaken awake from their beds in the morning and disrupted by loud noises. Now, on the opposite side of campus, Penn has warned of potential noise from the Quad renovations and the upcoming Student Performing Arts Center near Hill and Lauder.
