Good morning, Penn.
Happy Thursday, and happy August! As the Olympics roll on in Paris, so too does the news from Penn’s campus.
Three Penn affiliates testified at a Pennsylvania State Senate hearing last week, and the Philadelphia Historical Commission approved the creation of a new historic district near Penn.
But first, rising Wharton senior and star swimmer Matt Fallon's season came to an early end at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Rising senior Matt Fallon placed 10th in the 200-meter breaststroke semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, missing the finals and a shot at a medal by just 0.07 seconds.
After setting the American record in the event in June, Fallon was seeded third going into the preliminary rounds of Olympic competition. He came in second in his preliminary heat to advance to the semifinal. However, he was unable to recreate the magic from the United States Olympic Trials during the semifinals, finishing the race in 2:09.96 — three seconds off of his best time — and tying with current world record holder Qin Haiyang of China.
Fallon put together a tremendous season, and he will be remembered for his success across the Ivy League, NCAA Championships, and Olympic Trials this year and will always be known as the very first Penn swimmer in history to make Team USA.
As speculation over Vice President Kamala Harris’ vice presidential pick for the 2024 election continues to heat up, The Daily Pennsylvanian examined VP prospect and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s ties to Penn — and why they might matter on a national scale.
