Interim Penn President Larry Jameson and Provost John Jackson announced that Penn will launch Penn Washington, a new program with a physical hub for the University in Washington, D.C.
According to the University of Pennsylvania Almanac on Tuesday, Penn Washington aims to “enrich the connection between federal and global policy makers and Penn faculty, students, and staff” by establishing connections between three programs. The program will be comprised of the Penn Franklin Initiative, which is a set of programming centered around domestic policy; the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy & Global Engagement, which focuses on global policy in collaboration with Penn Global and Perry World House; and “a platform for the University of Pennsylvania in Washington” to support the long-running Penn in Washington program.
Penn Washington will continue to strengthen the relationship between Penn and Washington that has been built through avenues such as the Biden Center and the Penn in Washington semester program.
Penn in Washington is a semester-long program that places Penn students in internships in Washington that they participate in alongside classes. The program also hosts “lunches, internship workshops, and other events,” in Philadelphia according to the program’s website.
The Biden Center was founded in 2018 and has served as a policy institute with a mission of “engag[ing] Penn’s students and partners with its faculty and global centers to convene world leaders, develop and advance smart policy, and strengthen the national debate for continued American global leadership in the 21st century,” according to the Biden Center's website.
In February, the Department of Justice declined to prosecute former Penn professor and current United States President Joe Biden despite evidence that he purposefully withheld classified documents, some of which were stored at the Biden Center.
Penn Washington will be located at 101 Constitution Ave. Vice Provost for Global Initiatives Ezekiel Emanuel will serve as faculty director and Associate Vice Provost for Global Initiatives Amy Gadsden will serve as deputy director. It is unclear when the program will officially start.
