Welcome to the first edition of DP Daybreak of the summer! We’ll be bringing the top stories from Penn's campus to your inbox every Thursday morning for the next few months. 

This week, officers from Penn’s Division of Public Safety and the Philadelphia Police Department arrested 19 individuals — including seven Penn students — after an attempted takeover of Fisher-Bennett Hall last Friday, and the University has banned 24 non-affiliates from campus after their arrests at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment.

But first, Penn celebrated the Class of 2024 at the 268th Commencement on Monday.

Penn Class of 2024 honored at Commencement

Following a tumultuous year on campus, the Class of 2024 celebrated their graduation from Penn at the 268th Commencement on Monday morning at Franklin Field. 

The ceremony featured remarks from Interim Penn President Larry Jameson and this year’s Commencement keynote speaker, Siddhartha Mukherjee. The ceremony occurred without incident, even after weeks of campus activism and an announcement made prior to University officials’ entrance informing the crowd security would be on hand “in the event of a disruption.”

  Penn has banned 24 non-affiliated individuals from campus due to their involvement with and arrest at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, according to a letter obtained by The Daily Pennsylvanian. 

  Police arrested 19 individuals after pro-Palestinian activists attempted to occupy Fisher-Bennett Hall last week. The arrests prompted scattered protests around campus, including outside the Penn Museum, where an Alumni Weekend event was taking place. 

  Penn unveiled the stamp-themed 2024 Ivy Stone at Baccalaureate last week, breaking tradition from the typical Ivy Day reveal.

 Penn professor Michael Mann has been selected for a Royal Society Fellowship, gaining recognition for his contributions to advancing mathematical and scientific knowledge. 

  Two Penn researchers have received a grant from the White House for AI-powered research to find treatments for rare diseases.
