Amid the relentless downpour in Philadelphia, students' spirits have continued to shine through the gloomy skies across campus — even as we keep making our way through puddles and papers alike.
The Stuart Weitzman School of Design held a panel discussion on "Preserving Chinatowns in Philadelphia and Beyond," and a new mixed martial arts club on campus offers students the chance to become proficient in various forms of combat.
But first, the DP spoke with multiple former donors to assess the political contributions and stances of alumni who have withdrawn donations to Penn in recent months.
Since last fall, Penn has experienced an unprecedented donor fallout over the University's response to the Palestine Writes Literature Festival, antisemitic incidents on campus, and the Israel-Hamas war — during which the University lost several of its most high-profile financial contributors.
In light of this fallout, and the upcoming 2024 presidential election between two candidates with strong Penn ties, the DP looked at the political contributions and affiliations of former big-ticket donors to the University, and spoke with multiple withdrawn donors about their stances.
The First Generation Low-Income Dean's advisory board released a statement on the death of College sophomore Nathaniel Gordon, calling for Penn to provide more support for FGLI students.
On April 2, a panel of Penn professors, students, and activists discussed ongoing efforts to protect historic Chinatown communities across the country as new threats continue to challenge their preservation.
A new mixed martial arts club on campus, Penn MMA, gives students an opportunity to learn new combat techniques and participate in competitive tournaments.
In 2013, the DP reported that unnecessary stent procedures were performed at Pennsylvania Hospital by interventional cardiologist Vidya Banka. Last Thursday, new documents offered insight into former Penn Med associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care William Armstead’s research misconduct and data fabrication in his study of traumatic brain injury in newborn piglets.
