Good morning, Penn!

Welcome back to Quaker Nation! Women's lacrosse is receiving national preseason attention, and both basketball teams struggled against Harvard. But first, let's take a look at a situation that affected nearly every winter athlete: Penn’s temporary winter break housing.

This week's top story:

‘Like some jail cell’: Athletes allege subpar conditions, poor flexibility in winter break housing

Many athletes were housed in Sansom Place West during winter break, but not everyone was satisfied.

More from DP Sports:

  1. Despite a furious second-half comeback effort, men's basketball fell to Harvard at home, raising questions about the team's consistency.
  2. Women's basketball was outmatched by the Crimson on the road, though freshman guard Mataya Gayle continued her string of impressive performances.
  3. After an Ivy League championship in 2023, women's lacrosse has several players garnering high praise ahead of the new campaign.
Featured column:
Deputy Sports Editor Lucas Milgrim explores men's basketball loss to Harvard, and points out that some of the team's issues may not be alleviated once senior guard Clark Slajchert returns from injury.

Senior guard Clark Slajchert, still out with an ankle injury, cheers on his teammates.

Player of the week:
Gymnastics sophomore Skye Kerico set new personal season-highs on Vault, Uneven Bars, and Balance Beam on Sunday at West Virginia. She also placed first on Bars and Beam to help lead Penn to its first-ever win against West Virginia and 9th-highest score in program history.

One great read:

As the Buffalo Bills host the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs, they do so with a number of their key defensive players on the sideline. ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg details how Buffalo's banged-up defense could hurt them against the Chiefs, and explores how this depleted front could be a sign of things to come.
