With a recent performance that etched his name in the program's record books, freshman running back Malachi Hosley garnered multiple awards on Monday to add to his already lengthy list of accolades.
In a commanding victory over Cornell, Hosley sprinted into the spotlight, setting a Penn freshman record with 261 rushing yards, and scoring two touchdowns on 21 carries. His monumental effort on the Homecoming turf at Franklin Field was instrumental in the Quakers' 23-8 win over the Big Red. Hosley's feat ranks as the third-most rushing yards in a single game for the Red and Blue, and the second-most by a freshman in Ivy League history.
The running back's prowess did not go unrecognized, as he was named the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman of the Week, while also claiming the titles of Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. These accolades mark his third time earning weekly honors this season, and make him the first Ivy League player since 2015 to be a three-time Rookie of the Week recipient.
Adding to his list of accomplishments in the game against Cornell, Hosley delivered two remarkable long touchdown runs — a 68-yarder and a 96-yarder, with the latter setting the record for the longest offensive play in program history. The remarkable freshman has been rapidly climbing the Ivy leaderboards, now ranking fifth in rushing yards, tied for third in touchdowns, and third in rushing yards per game (averaging 70.7).
Hosley has achieved these numbers on a mere 78 carries, showcasing his efficiency and breakout talent. Glancing ahead, the Quakers are gearing up for a critical Ivy League showdown as they travel to Cambridge to face Harvard on Saturday. With the Crimson holding onto first place in the conference and Penn tied for second, the upcoming contest is poised to be a decisive battle in the quest for Ancient Eight supremacy.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Hosley to see if he can maintain his electrifying form and continue to rewrite the history books, one touchdown at a time.
