The School of Engineering and Applied Science established the Madison “Maddie” Magee Award for Undergraduate Excellence.

This award honors the memory of Magee, who graduated from Penn in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics and a master's in bioengineering.

Magee passed away on May 28 while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. The award will be given to Engineering seniors who reflect the same enthusiasm, energy, and excellence as Maddie, according to Penn Engineering Today.

The award was established after 130 donors raised over $50,000. One of the donors included the Philadelphia Phillies, with whom she had been working on their integrative baseball performance department after graduating from Penn.

Maddie worked as a teaching assistant and tutored students at both Penn and Drexel.

“It was impossible to not see the impact that she was having on our department and the School," Kevin Turner, professor and department chair of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, said to Penn Engineering Today.

Magee's peers and professors remember her as a passionate and determined individual that was enthusiastic about everything she did.

"Maddie was full of life and promise and brought unmatched passion and spirit to everything she did,” Turner said.
