The 2023 Forbes Best Large Employers list ranked Penn Medicine at No. 30 and the University of Pennsylvania at No. 65.
The ranking is determined yearly by surveying workers at companies that employ over 5,000 people in partnership with the market research firm Statista. Participants are asked if they would recommend their current employers and to list any other employer they would also recommend, according to Forbes.
Penn Medicine, which employs over 46,000 employees, had a 13-spot improvement from last year. It holds the spot for the largest employer in the greater Philadelphia area and was ranked No. 89 in the Forbes Best Employers for Women list in 2022.
Penn, which employs 18,000 people, jumped 64 spots from its No. 129 ranking last year.
“We’re not just the largest private employer in the city of Philadelphia and a major regional economic engine; we’re a community where our faculty and staff find opportunities to grow. When you strive to build the most inclusive, innovative, and engaged workforce; the world takes notice,” Penn Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli told Penn Today in 2021 after ranking No. 90.
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, with 15,000 employees, saw a decline in its ranking. Last year, CHOP ranked first on the “Best Large Employers List” but failed to break into the top 100 this year, settling at No. 158, The Philadelphia Business Journal reported.
In total, four Philadelphia-area employers placed in the top 100. Other notable Philadelphia-based companies on the list included Vanguard, at No. 51, and W.L. Gore and Associates, at No. 63.
Several other universities made the top 100 in addition to Penn, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranking at No. 1 and the University of Kentucky ranking at No. 6.
“These independent rankings based on anonymous employee surveys affirm Penn’s position as one of the most attractive workplaces in our region,” Carnaroli said to Penn Today in 2021.
