Ivy basketball is back, and this time Penn versus Princeton is a lot closer.
In a rematch of last year’s Ivy League Tournament final, which the Tigers won 63-34, the Quakers have kept this one much tighter. After one half of play at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym, the Red and Blue find themselves up by a score of 33-28.
Both teams entered the game not having lost since November and carrying significant winning streaks: Penn with four straight wins and Princeton with seven.
Pacing the Quakers thus far are senior forward Princess Aghayere with 12 points, junior guard Phoebe Sterba with nine, and sophomore center Eleah Parker with eight. All of Sterba’s points have come from behind the arc, and Aghayere has also scored a pair of treys.
Parker has starred for the Red and Blue on defense, adding five rebounds and a pair each of steals and blocks.
Penn sped out to an early 18-11 lead after one quarter, but Princeton cut the lead to just one midway through the second at 26-25. However, the Red and Blue rallied with late buckets from Aghayere, sophomore forward Tori Crawford, and Parker to close the half up by five.
After missing the team’s first eight games with a broken arm, last season’s Ivy League Player of the Year Bella Alarie is back and just as tough for opponents to handle. The Princeton junior has resumed her dominance on the court, leading the home team with eight points and six rebounds.
