With chants of “no range, no train,” members of the union representing many Yale Police Department officers protested a change in firearm policy outside YPD headquarters on Wednesday, reported The Yale Daily News.
The protest was in response to increasingly severe disciplinary actions, including dismissal, when officers fail to reach a designated level of gun proficiency after a period of 30 days. Before the policy change, if officers failed gun proficiency tests twice, they could repeat the training and testing process until they passed.
Rich Simons, the president of the protesting union, told the Yale Daily News that Yale University cannot expect officers to pass the test without providing a location to practice shooting.
Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said in an email to the Yale Daily News that YPD officers have training opportunities and the shooting range will be available to officers after the completion of renovations currently in progress.
