Winner: Donald Trump
In an unexpected turn of events, 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump has become the first Penn graduate to be elected president. Pennsylvania turned out the be integral to his victory, swinging red for the first time in nearly 30 years despite the strong support for Clinton from Penn students.
Loser: Penn State
The United States Department of Education have announced that they will be fining Penn State $2.4 million. This fine is a result of the university’s violation of the Clery Act, a law requiring colleges that receive federal funding to report campus crimes. The majority of the fine is due to the university failing to report over 300 crimes—including five sexual assaults—over a three-year span.
Winner: Pat Toomey
Counting another win for the Republican Party, Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) won a narrow victory against Democrat Katie McGinty. With this win, Republicans will maintain their majority in the Senate for another two years.
Loser: Students with dining plans
Due to a water main break, 1920 Commons was closed on Monday. One of three dining halls on campus, this disrupted meal plans for many Penn students, particularly freshmen.
Winner: Philadelphia commuters
Only a day before the election, SEPTA announced the end of the transit strike. Lasting nearly a week, the strike caused increased traffic in Philadelphia, larger crowds on Regional Rail trains, and anxiety over election day voter turnout. The agreement reached between SEPTA and TWU 234 will provide for higher wages and pension improvements among other benefits for SEPTA workers.
