Columbia University is investigating its wrestling team after racially and sexually charged messages surfaced, the Columbia Spectator reported.
The team’s season-opener against Binghamton was cancelled as a result. The exchanges were between wrestlers who are currently seniors, and occurred over two years ago.
The University stated Thursday night that these messages were “appalling, at odds with the core values of the University, violate team guidelines, and have no place in our community," the Spectator reported.
The Harvard men’s soccer team’s season was cancelled over a similar incident earlier this month.
In response to the messages, Sydney Park, who does laundry for the wrestling team, wrote a letter published in the Spectator expressing her previous commitment to the team and her current disappointment.
“I refuse to support you and your teammates,” she wrote in the Spectator.
Screenshots of the group chat appeared on Bwog Thursday.
One message said, “I hope someone actually gets sexually assaulted.”
