Portland Community College garnered media attention on Friday, as the school kicked off events for its “Whiteness History Month.”
Organizers say the purpose of the event series is to examine racism by exploring the construction of whiteness.
According to the project’s website, “Whiteness History Month Project, unlike heritage months, is not a celebratory endeavor.”
The name of the event sparked controversy when it was first announced earlier this year, and some students feel it sends the wrong message.
"You don't want to call it Whiteness History Month," PCC student Abdul Ahmed said. "You just make it seem like it's all about white people."
The first event of the series involved students, faculty and members of the public taking the online Harvard Implicit Bias Assessment, and then discussing what it means to be white.
