Ohio University canceled various Greek Week events after students wrote Pro-Trump campaign messages on a graffiti wall.
The free speech wall contained the phrases “Build the Wall!!” and “Trump 2016," referencing presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposed immigration reform at the United States’ southern border.
Ohio University said these messages were insulting and isolating particularly to the university’s Hispanic population. As a result, Ohio University took out various events from their annual week that celebrates Fraternity and Sorority philanthropy.
Airbands, a Greek Week tradition where groups dance and perform skits, as well as a dodgeball tournament and 90s Field Day are events that have been eliminated for this year’s Greek Week line-up.
Some students responded by spray-painting over the Trump mottos.
Ohio University will not be releasing the names of the members or chapters involved in the incident because the university said these students were expressing their freedom of speech. However, Ohio University also said that the connotation of those words are not a reflection of the university’s feelings as a whole.
