Actor and filmmaker James Franco will be Cornell University’s keynote speaker at the 148th Commencement Weekend for Senior Convocation on May 28.
The Senior Convocation is scheduled for noon in Cornell’s Schoellkopf Stadium, and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, according to The Cornell Chronicle.
Known first for his role in the television program “Freaks and Geeks,” Franco’s more recent roles include “Spring Breakers” and “The Interview,” and he is also known for writing a collection of short stories named after his home town, Palo Alto.
Notable among his numerous awards for acting and filmmaking is his 2002 win of the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television, for his role as James Dean in “James Dean.”
In addition to cinematography, Franco is also involved in philanthropy, working with The Art of Elysium, a group that partners artists and critically ill children. With a bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in creative writing from the University of California, Los Angeles, he also attended Columbia University, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and the Rhode Island School of Design.
