On an average night, 20 people are caught with fake IDs in Philadelphia as fake IDs are becoming increasingly easier to identify.
Smokey Joe's bartender and bouncer Mike Ryan told Billy Penn "it gets old" dealing with fake IDs. "You get some people and they say, 'oh, you got me,' and they walk away. And then you get other people who give you a real hard time about it." He told the story of a time when a "guy was so confident in his fake that he called 911 and asked the police [to] come inspect it," which resulted in his arrest when they declared the ID fake.
Philadelphia bartenders and bouncers like Ryan also talked to Billy Penn about what they look for when checking IDs. These included holograms, the signature on the ID, the state the ID is from and whether or not the ID holder appears nervous.
