Of all the courses Penn offers there aren’t too many that are about fashion. But, don’t fear! If you love clothes and style and have leafed through every issue of Vogue hundreds of times, there is a group for you.
The fashion collective at Penn consists of two groups: Dzine2Show and The WALK. D2S focuses on the fashion shows and clothing design. The WALK is Penn’s fashion magazine, and I have enjoyed mt time working for the publication. There are two issues each year, once per semester.
There are many ways to get involved with The WALK. Each semester the magazine has positions available for application, from stylist positions to various editorships.
Not all positions are always available, but if you attend the meeting at the beginning of each semester the current members will present all of the open positions. After the meeting, the members send out an application.
I was selected to be a blog photographer for the fashion blog during the Spring 2014 semester. The blog is an extension of the magazine called “Seen on The Walk.” I take five photos each week of fashionable people around campus and submit my pictures to be published online on the blog.
Being a part of the fashion collective is a lot of fun. I receive emails, which means I find out firsthand about all things fashion on campus. There are two fashion shows each year — one in the fall and one in the spring that is part of Penn’s Fashion Week.
One more note about The WALK if you do get involved: make sure you attend the launch party when the magazine is released. I went to the one for the winter issue and I got a $20 Uber credit. But most importantly, go to celebrate your hard work and fashion. I think it’s the best thing to see a room full of Penn’s best-dressed.
