Penn President Amy Gutmann was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the London School of Economics and Political Science on July 18. Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have achieved excellence in the arts, sciences or public life.
“I am so deeply honored to be named an Honorary Fellow at LSE for one of the very same reasons I feel so privileged to be Penn’s president,” Gutmann said in a statement. “LSE and Penn both share a profound commitment to creating knowledge that will have a positive impact on our world.”
“I also treasure the amazing spectrum of friends, students, and colleagues who I have come to know through these renowned universities,” she added.
Gutmann received a master’s degree in political science from LSE and has received global recognition for her successful efforts in expanding access to higher education and promoting interdisciplinary knowledge, as well as for her endeavors in education, deliberation and democracy.
Her most recent book “The Spirit of Compromise,” which was published last May, argued for the necessity of compromising mindsets in democratic politics.
At Penn, Gutmann established a no-loan policy for undergraduate students, setting a precedent for universities across the country. She has also championed interdisciplinary knowledge through the creation of the Penn Integrates Knowledge professors — scholars whose research and teaching integrate knowledge across disciplines.
Gutmann has also served as the chair of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues since she was appointed by President Obama in 2009.
